<procdesc>The impervious classification was created from 2007 high-resolution satellite imagery (0.25 meter resolution) using automated classification methods in Arc GIS Feature Analyst. To begin the process, a shapefile was created for use in Feature Analyst. Using the shapefile in an editing session, the 0.25 meter imagery was referenced to manually collect training data samples for impervious surface features. A wide representation of features were selected ranging from highways and secondary roads, to industrial buildings and single family houses in an effort to collect samples of all types of impervious surfaces. Once training data was collected, the Feature Analyst learner was set up to process the training sites in order to produce an automated representation of impervious features from the imagery. The learner was configured with a user defined input representation of 25 pixels. An aggregate area of 35 pixels was specified a minimum. Once the learner settings were applied, the first learner iteration was run.
After the first iteration, missed areas were identified using the ad-missed tool in Feature Analyst and another iteration was run using the same Learner configuration as the first phase. A final iteration was run in Feature Analyst in order to remove any clutter. The correct/incorrect tool was used for this final iteration in order to identify correctly and incorrectly classified areas. The result from this iteration was saved for manual editing. The impervious shapefile was converted to a binary image for manual editing. The binary image was then manually edited for incorrectly classified or missed features at a scale of 1:2,500 using the Arc GIS raster editing toolbar.</procdesc>

<stepDesc>The impervious classification was created from 2007 high-resolution satellite imagery (0.25 meter resolution) using automated classification methods in Arc GIS Feature Analyst. To begin the process, a shapefile was created for use in Feature Analyst. Using the shapefile in an editing session, the 0.25 meter imagery was referenced to manually collect training data samples for impervious surface features. A wide representation of features were selected ranging from highways and secondary roads, to industrial buildings and single family houses in an effort to collect samples of all types of impervious surfaces. Once training data was collected, the Feature Analyst learner was set up to process the training sites in order to produce an automated representation of impervious features from the imagery. The learner was configured with a user defined input representation of 25 pixels. An aggregate area of 35 pixels was specified a minimum. Once the learner settings were applied, the first learner iteration was run.
After the first iteration, missed areas were identified using the ad-missed tool in Feature Analyst and another iteration was run using the same Learner configuration as the first phase. A final iteration was run in Feature Analyst in order to remove any clutter. The correct/incorrect tool was used for this final iteration in order to identify correctly and incorrectly classified areas. The result from this iteration was saved for manual editing. The impervious shapefile was converted to a binary image for manual editing. The binary image was then manually edited for incorrectly classified or missed features at a scale of 1:2,500 using the Arc GIS raster editing toolbar.</stepDesc>
